Our favourite hike through the Weitental
This hike is one of those routes that many of our guests here at the STOCK resort keep putting on their to-do list time and time again – because it’s so straightforward and offers that very special high-alpine feeling.
The starting point is the gondola lift in Hintertux. The lift takes you up to the Sommerbergalm – you’ll only need a ticket to get there, as the return leg of the walk takes you back down through the beautiful Weitental valley to Hintertux.
From the Sommerbergalm, the path initially leads uphill towards the Tuxerjoch. It’s worth taking your time on this first section, as the climb is relatively steep. Once at the top, the landscape opens up and the route follows an easy, gently descending farm track through the Weitental valley towards the valley floor.
Step by step, the surroundings become quieter, more open and unspoilt. All around, alpine flowers bloom in the most beautiful colours in summer, the mountain air is crisp, and everywhere you can hear the characteristic whistling of marmots.
And that’s exactly what makes this walk so special: time and again, you’ll spot one of these cheeky little creatures by the side of the path. They lie in the sun, peering over curiously – and are gone again in the next moment.
Passing the impressive Schleier waterfall (a hotspot for photographers), the route continues towards Bichlalm, where a cosy break is the perfect way to spend some time. Afterwards, the path leads back to Hintertux.
A little tip from personal experience: in summer, be sure to take sun protection – there’s hardly any shade in the Weitental. But all the more panoramic views and that alpine atmosphere to enjoy!
FAQs about the hike through the Weitental
Is the hike through the Weitental very challenging?
The walk is well within your capabilities if you’re in reasonably good shape. The first section from the Sommerbergalm towards the Tuxerjoch is relatively steep – it’s worth starting off slowly and taking your time here. After that, the path becomes more pleasant and follows an easy, steadily descending farm track through the beautiful Weitental valley.
Do you need a ticket for the ascent and descent?
No, for this hike, a ticket for the gondola up to the Sommerbergalm is sufficient. The return journey isn’t by cable car, but on foot through the Weitental valley, past the Schleierwasserfall waterfall, with the option of a break at the Bichlalm, all the way to Hintertux.
Can you spot marmots along the way?
Yes, with a bit of luck you might even see loads of them. In the Weitental valley, you can often hear them whistling from a distance. Sometimes they sit cheekily by the side of the path or lie in the sun – and then disappear back into their burrows in a flash.
Are there any places to stop for a bite to eat along the way?
Yes, a break at the Bichlalm is a wonderful option. After taking in the high-alpine atmosphere, the colourful alpine flowers and the impressive Schleierwasserfall, it’s a lovely spot to catch your breath, relax and reflect on the special moments of the tour. Do make sure to take enough to drink with you, though, as the hut is quite near the end of the tour.
