Three times a week, we set off together from STOCK resort to the Zemmschlucht gorge in Zillertal. One of my personal favourite e-bike tours takes you into the Stillup Valley. Peaceful, unspoilt and simply beautiful, it lies nestled within the Zillertal Alps Nature Park – and, despite its impressive length of 17 kilometres, is the shortest of the four side valleys. For me, it’s a place where you immediately sense why being active in nature does you so much good.

From Finkenberg, the route takes you along the ‘old road’ to Mayrhofen. Passing the Ahronbahn railway, the tour begins straight away with a slightly more challenging section. It’s uphill all the way to the toll booth – here, it’s time to shift down a gear, switch on the turbo and find your rhythm. After that, the road winds its way further into the valley. Trees on both sides provide pleasant shade, the ringing of cowbells accompanies the ride, and with every metre it becomes a little quieter, more open and more unspoilt.

After a short tunnel, the view opens up to the crest of the dam – and suddenly there it is: the Stillup Reservoir. At an altitude of 1,116 metres, nestled between steep mountain slopes, the water shimmers in a rich green-blue. A moment to stop, take a deep breath and marvel.

It becomes particularly beautiful from the Wasserfall inn onwards. From here, the road is closed to public traffic – only shuttle buses and mountain farmers are still on the road. That is precisely what makes this section so special. The route winds romantically along the lake, deeper and deeper into the valley, past little natural spectacles, streams and views that you’d love to capture forever.

The destination: the Grüne-Wand-Hütte at 1,438 metres. Just before the end, there’s a steeper stretch – a little challenging finish, but one that’s more than worth it. Once you’ve reached the top, a stop for refreshments tastes twice as good. Down-to-earth, cosy, surrounded by nature – that’s exactly what summer in the Zillertal feels like. The Kaiserschmarrn there is legendary!

For anyone who’d like to explore further, the Stilluptal also offers lovely hiking destinations such as the Kasseler Hütte at 2,178 metres. If you’d prefer to take it at a more leisurely pace, you can easily tailor the route to suit you and simply drive as far as you feel comfortable.

My tip: this tour is a real experience from spring to autumn. It’s particularly lovely on days when you want to combine exercise, tranquillity and nature. First, get out and about, then head back to the STOCK resort, relax in the spa and let the day draw to a gentle close – for me, it’s precisely this mix that defines the #stockfeeling.

Is the e-bike tour to the Stilluptal also suitable for leisure cyclists?

Yes, the tour is a wonderful experience on an e-bike. Although some sections are steeper – briefly at the start and just before the Grüne-Wand-Hütte – with a bit of basic fitness, a low gear and a little extra turbo 😊, the ride becomes a marvellous experience of nature.

Can you shorten the tour?

Yes, absolutely. The lovely thing about the Stillup Valley is that you don’t have to cycle all the way to the very end. Even the stretch to the Stillup Reservoir or to the Wasserfall inn offers stunning views and authentic moments of Zillertal nature. True to the motto: #can-do-it-all-but-don’t-have-to.

Are there places to stop for refreshments along the way?

Yes, there are several. The Gasthaus Wasserfall, the Stillupperhaus and the Grüne-Wand-Hütte are particularly popular. Perfect for a cosy break, a little refreshment and that special moment when you’re sitting in the heart of the mountains and simply taking it all in.

Is the route completely flat?

No, the tour isn’t entirely free of inclines – and that’s exactly what makes it a little bit special. The good news is that the more challenging sections are easily manageable on an e-bike, and if you’d prefer a more leisurely ride, you can simply cycle as far as the lake or the Gasthaus Wasserfall. There, too, plenty of Stilluptal bliss awaits.

The starting point is the gondola lift in Hintertux. The lift takes you up to the Sommerbergalm – you’ll only need a ticket to get there, as the return leg of the walk takes you back down through the beautiful Weitental valley to Hintertux.

From the Sommerbergalm, the path initially leads uphill towards the Tuxerjoch. It’s worth taking your time on this first section, as the climb is relatively steep. Once at the top, the landscape opens up and the route follows an easy, gently descending farm track through the Weitental valley towards the valley floor.

Step by step, the surroundings become quieter, more open and unspoilt. All around, alpine flowers bloom in the most beautiful colours in summer, the mountain air is crisp, and everywhere you can hear the characteristic whistling of marmots.

And that’s exactly what makes this walk so special: time and again, you’ll spot one of these cheeky little creatures by the side of the path. They lie in the sun, peering over curiously – and are gone again in the next moment.

Passing the impressive Schleier waterfall (a hotspot for photographers), the route continues towards Bichlalm, where a cosy break is the perfect way to spend some time. Afterwards, the path leads back to Hintertux.

A little tip from personal experience: in summer, be sure to take sun protection – there’s hardly any shade in the Weitental. But all the more panoramic views and that alpine atmosphere to enjoy!
